Show House room demonstrates green design

When West Palm Beach interior designer Lisa Erdmann decorated the master sitting room of the 2009 American Red Cross Designer Show House, she pulled a page from the bridal handbook by using something old, something new — and sustainable.

The Show House, presented by the Greater Palm Beach Area chapter of the Red Cross, is at 1125 N. Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach.

Following an eco-friendly theme, Lisa used a number of English antiques, including a 19th-century curved wood settee and a rosewood campaign trunk. Re-using existing materials is a key element of environmental living, after all.

She placed those and other items atop a shiny cork floor. Cork is a renewable resource that doesn’t require the logging of trees.

For the walls, Lisa chose a custom paint from Benjamin Moore’s Aura line, which emits a low amount of volatile organic compounds. And the fabrics in the room are natural cotton and linen; the blinds and console are made of bamboo.

To borrow HGTV interior designer Candice Olson’s catchphrase — How divine!

The Show House is open through Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $30.
